Re: Real or Fake ?

My son has to sell 10 for the Freshman baseball team. 8 foot Douglas Fir cost me $52.00. It helps pay for their new uniforms. Seems pricey to me, but high school sports gets you coming and going

8 ft. REAL tree = $15

I don't typically cut my own, cause the price of gas to go get it etc..., and I hate to see all the ones already cut at your local corner lot go to waste.

Oregon is the largest producer of Christmas trees, so I might as well give to the cause.

H.

Trees around here typically go for $5-10.
Some lots get $14!!!!!!!!
Douglas or Frazier are "imported", rare, expensive. They are advertised as "executive trees."

Mine?
Picked out a 6' Balsam. (backyard)
Cost -- 55 cents , when I planted it a few years ago.

Fake, and I'll be glad when the thing has to come down. As far as I am concerned I would like to throw the whole thing out for the junk man decorations and all. :D Not really a Scrooge but what is the deal with having a full grown tree in the house?? Who started this tradition anyways. Every year I try to talk the wife into one of those little ceramic jobs ya just sit on the table with the little colored lights you put into the holes in it.

Re: Real or Fake ?

The Chronological History of the Christmas Tree
St. Boniface Story

Why do we have a decorated Christmas Tree? In the 7th century a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, went to Germany to teach the Word of God. He did many good works there, and spent much time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the cradle of the Christmas Decoration Industry.

Legend has it that he used the triangular shape of the Fir Tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The converted people began to revere the Fir tree as God's Tree, as they had previously revered the Oak. By the 12th century it was being hung, upside-down, from ceilings at Christmastime in Central Europe, as a symbol of Christianity.

The first decorated tree was at Riga in Latvia, in 1510. In the early 16th century, Martin Luther is said to have decorated a small Christmas Tree with candles, to show his children how the stars twinkled through the dark night.

spank me if applicable--the tree represents our recognition of the birth of christ,-yea, Gods Son.

Me, I like this celebration of the birth of Jesus. Folks who do not believe--cool for you.

Re: Real or Fake ?

We have always done Christmas at my mother in laws house with 14ft ceilings on one side and 12ft on the other
Until this year it's always been a 9-10 ft real tree hung from ceiling beams. (cats can't tip it over that way) However do to the lack of cats and kids under 14 we were going to just use a 2ft tree with fiberoptics.. but a co-worker of my wife's was trying to get rid of a 6ft plactic/fake tree so we ok.. haven't put it together yet.. hope it doesn't look too DORKY!

Re: Real or Fake ?

well we have a fake tree. and the only reason we put that up is for the grandkids when they come over. we do decorate outside the house too. but sometimes i feel the real reason for christmas gets lost in all the hype. someone sent me this pic a couple years ago and it really made me think. at first i was offended until i thought about it, it is not ment as a joke. but more as a symbol of what christmas has become. it wasnt santa up on that cross for us. anyway thats what i got out of it. any other hidden messages in this pic?
Re: Real or Fake ?

A 7' fake tress - about 25 years old! Man, it is time for a new one. I love real trees, but hate the mess. The mess wins out every year. I tell the wife, "The artifical looks ugly, but we will get a real tree next year." Then we decide it is too messy and put up the old artificial again. Oh well.

Fake, the last real one we had was many years ago, cut them myself. Toke the last one out front, away from everything rpoped it up. Then flicked a bic in it and walked away, about 10 steps 25-30' flames! The wife was watching and said "never again" I sure do miss the smell of the real thing!
Richard

Re: Real or Fake ?

Instead of throwing them out..tie a cinderblock to it and drop it just off the bank of a body of water...In a few weeks...go fish!

Had a fake one growing up....I always had to put it together..what a pain when the color code wears off.
