Remove/Replace Pivot Tube

Hi,

I have a 1983 Yamaha 115Hp V4 with a need to have its tilt/trim rebuilt. I need to spread the mounting clamps to remove the tilt/trim unit. I have removed the motor from the boat (having removed steering cable etc) and undone the large retaining nut.

I have tried to "persuade" the mounting clamps apart (with lots of WD40 and a large hammer), as well as trying to budge the pivot tube - both to no avail.

The dealer suggested cutting the pivot tube in two and removing the sections on the bench - a new tube is "only" $280. Another suggestion was to heat the mounting clamps with an oxy

Is there a way to remove the tube in such a way that:
•
• The paint on the mounting clamps remains intact
• The original pivot tube can be re-installed once the tilt/trim is fixed

Thanks.

Re: Remove/Replace Pivot Tube

heat heat and more heat. sounds like the saltwater nasties got ya.If it were mine I would carefully inspect the shift shaft in the mid-section before doing any repairs.
How I do it is to leave the motor attached to the hull. remove the nut from the stbd side of the tube. remove the stbd bracket to hull bolts and move the stbd bracket over to the stbd side. if done correctly its really not to bad. on a saltwater motor that old you may have a bit of problems with the bracket to trim unit bolts. paint is cheaper than drilling and tapping. dont be afraid to use smoke. smoke is your friend. and its cool :) :) .
good luck and keep posting

Re: Remove/Replace Pivot Tube

Shift shaft:confused: The tube appears to have no other function than connecting the mounting clamps to the motor, and the steering cable through the centre. The tube itself is sound, with rust visible only at the two ends - the centre section paint is intact and seemingly protected by a good coating of grease.

Is an oxy/acetylene torch OK, or too harsh for this application?? Should I completely remove the tube, or just the stbd bracket? Just removing the bracket will give me the access I need.

Re: Remove/Replace Pivot Tube

hello
the shift shaft has nothing to do with the tube. however they were prone to rust away. check it first. there is no sense in spending a lot of time and oxy/acetylyne when the next failure will scrap the project.
some times its 25-30 hours and 1500 worth of parts to change a shift shaft.
yes just moving the stbd bracket will suffice.
good luck and keep posting
