After looking on BRP's parts site, they don't list a Johnson 70 horse until 1974. Has the same block part number 385758 as J/E '72-73 65hp, and J/E '74-75 70 horse.

Did they even make a 70 horse in '72?

Find out exactly what you've got, as the 70 was never offered with electric shift. HOWEVER, a 70hp cowling will fit on a 1972 or earlier 3-cylinder, so it is possible someone has cobbled some parts together. Start with model number for the "70" and we can go from there.

72 is hydro-electric shift, 73 is mechanical-hydro shift. go with 73-77 all are mechical hydro shift.

If its a '72, its not a 70hp and, if its a 70hp, its not a '72. As mentioned, you could have a motor that has the hood off of a later motor. Check the model number on the transom bracket and the serial number stamped in the "freeze plug." I've never looked to see if a 70hp powerhead will fit on a '72 motor but it might so you could have a hybrid motor.
