Replace impeller OMC 3.8L 1983

hello,<br /><br />well i am new here and dutch so my english can be a little bit wrong sometimes :) <br /><br />We have OMC 3.8 sterndrive and we have a cooling prob. Some guy told us to replace the impeller cause this should be the problem.<br />It's a bit hard to get proper info about how to replace the impeller around here, we are getting drawing just slighty different from our engine and so.<br />So is there anybody in here that can tell me how to replace the impeller step by step ?<br />or else leading me a bit in the wright direction ?

You will have to try to find a manual somewhere. It will be a great help. Here is only some basics. I don't have time or space to write the details<br /><br />You have to remove the stern drive.<br />Drain the upper gearcase of oil.<br />Disasemble the upper unit from the drive.<br />The impeller/pump housing is on the bottom side of the upper unit and held in by 4 bolts.<br />Upon inspection of the housing and surrounding parts, you may need a complete water pump kit and not just an impeller.<br /><br />I would not go this route until I inspected the water flow coming from the "pee holes" at the ball gears. You should get a strong steady stream. Then I would check the water flow coming from the sterndrive to the thermostat housing. You should be able to fill up a 2 gallon bucket fairly quick. If the water stream is weak you have to change the impeller and possibly the the housing. If the stream is good, investigate your thermostat or look for a blockage perhaps in the manifolds or risers.<br /><br />Good luck!<br /><br />Oh, and welcome to Iboats.

thnkx for the reply.<br />I'm trying to get a copy of the selco sterndrive repair manual but no bookshop around here can order it and it will take a few weeks when it is shipped from the us.<br />And the summer is coming so the boat needs to be fixed yesterday :p <br /><br />will have a look at those points you gave me :)
