Right amount of water coming from outboard engine ?

1988 Evinrude 28hp

1. should water be coming out that hole on the back of the shaft?
2. that seem like enough water for idle when just started ?


or should I let it warm up and maybe the thermostat will open and that will
be a jet ?

1. YES, it intentional and necessary
2. Close your eyes and ignore it. It has nothing to do with the thermostat, or pump output, or even temperature.

Most of the water comes out through the prop with the exhaust. Or if not a thru-hub, out the port above the prop on the cav plate. This all happens underwater, so you won't see it.

Might see if it's getting up to temp. (top of head should be warm to the touch).

ok thanks.. I just wanted to make sure the impeller was doing what it should be 100%. I see some outboards shooting jets out the back.. and my little one was spitting I wondered if the impeller was having issues.

We don't know the condition of the pump with this limited info.
