RPM gauge or Tach not working right

I have a RPM gauge that will read fine, then all of a sudden nothing. If you go a little more, then it will start reading again. I thought it was a faulty gauge so I changed the gauge out to a new one. Still does the samething. Off sometimes, then reads sometimes. Im thinking its a connection somewhere either on the gauge or on the wires coming off the stator that's not making good contact. I have 1984 V4, 115Hp Evinrude. Any suggestions how to fix problem?

Clean all connections on back of the tach shiney bright as well as the ground connection from the tach to ground. Good luck

Check the connections on the engine for the regulator rectifier. Do you have a voltmeter? Any changes in the readings? Ensure that the pole settings on the tach are correct.

Possible that the rectifier on the engine is going bad. The rectifier does two things: provide a charge to the battery and transmit a tach signal to the gauge. When they go bad, you can a number of different tach failure modes. Have you noticed that the voltmeter is reading lower lately?
