RPM Gauge will not read all the time

This thing is driving me crazy. I installed a new gauge (Tach or RPM, and still wont read all the time. I have checked all my wires both on back of gauge and at the wires that come off the stator or rectifier. I made sure the setting on the back of the Tach is set at 6 , what it calls for, because I have a 1984, V4,115Hp, Evinrude. Is there something Im not checking for this Gauge to act like this. My Battery is fully charge whenever I get back off the lake, so I think the charging part is working fine. Just seems like there is something not making contact all the time. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

If it is working sometimes then I would check your wiring and connections. Install per manufacturer instructions and solder all electrical connections and seal them with marine grade shrink tubing. If it still acts up replace the gauge.
