I've been looking at some older boats with very low hours. Feels like that cuddy I've always wanted is going to happen this summer ....

So most of these boats have the older style flip and fold front seating. It seems like it would be simple to remove those for a bucket type Captain and 1st Mate chair? Looks like the pedestal is around $100 and the bucket chair around $180.

What are the concerns for the install? Would I need to hit a stringer in order to properly secure the pedestal? Some of these older boats probably have wood floor where (I think?) newer boats have fiberglass floors??

Again, looks and seems like an easy upgrade ... but maybe I am missing something that would make this 'not a good idea'?

thx Gang!!

It depends on what boat you end up w, but no, typically it isn't remove fold out lounger and install pedestals and captain's chairs.

There are options to DIY a good mount and there are zip toggles or molly bolts that are designed to assist w pedestal install.

A lot depends upon how old the boat is that you are going to get. The older the boat the more likely the floor and stringers have rot. My floor had rot in some places but not in others. All the stringers had rot so as I am replacing it all. I plan to put in 3/4 inch backer plywood under the 1/2 inch floor plywood where the seats mount to increase the grab strength for what ever style seats I put in. I guess you could put a layer on top of the existing floor but it would need to cover a larger area of the floor as opposed to a small square right under the pedestal base.
