Pictures, pictures, pictures... We can't see what you see, so you have to supply pictures so we can give advice or suggestion.

And welcome to iboats... :welcome: Good to have you aboard...

Post some pictures and more info and I'm very sure you will receive ideas and suggestion from a very knowledgeable forum of boaters...

I think you are looking at your tachometer. Tachs often have a selector switch to match the tach to the motor. Speedos seldom have wiring except for a light.

What kind of power - Mercury, Johnson, Mercruiser, etc.?

You are looking at the Tachometer, not a speedometer. At the bottom of the dial you will see a label that indicates "x1000". Since the dial is calibrated 1 - 6, that means 1000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000 xxx, 6,000 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE. The tach indicates how fast the engine is running.

Re: speedometer problems

What makes you think that plug connects to anything. Lots of boats have one or more spare plugs -- usually carrying +12 volts, ground, and perhaps a light circuit. We have no idea what boat you have but most instruments, tachometers included on older bolts do not have plug-in connections. There are screw terminals on the back labeled "I" (12 volts with the key in the RUN position), "L" (+12 volts when the navigation lights are on, a ground connection, and for fuel. temp, tachometer, oil pressure gauges there is an "S" (sender) terminal that connects to the applicable sender on the engine. For the +12 volt, light and ground connections you can connect to the same terminals on any other gauge.. The sender connection comes from the engine harness.
