Speedometer stopped up

I have a 1994 150 HP Evinrude Intruder and the speedometer quit working. Did some checking and the speedometer hole which is located on the lower gear case unit, was stopped up with some trash. I took a piece of wire and cleaned out the hole to make sure there was no more trash obstructing the inlet. Speedometer is still not registering at gauge. There is a small L shape or elbow fitting where the Speedometer tube hooks onto. Is it possible that the elbow is clogged somehow? Appreciate any advice you can give me to clear this up?

It possible. You could disconnect at both ends and blow out with air.For speedo accuracy you would be much better served with a gps, either hand held or a fish finder/gps for accurate speed. When I built my new dash I deleted the lying useless speedo in favor of a nice antique airglide compass.

If I had a dime for every time my speedometer pitot tube got plugged up, I would have....okay...about two dollars now. Yes, remove the tube at the gauge and blow out the debris and reinstall it again. But like previous stated, such a speedometer is merely a suggestion at best. But at least you can see that you are moving.

Funny you say that - it agrees with my prior assumptions as well. That said, I recently compared my '83 vintage speedo to GPS and it was within 1-2 MPH (optimistic for sure) across the whole range. Shocked I was, hmmm?

I have to say that is way better then most water pressure type speedometer gauges display about the true speed. Be glad and happy boating.
