Alright guys. My father in law was kind enough to buy me a boat for seventy five dollars two years ago. After rebuilding the carb, fuel pump, coils, condensers, points, wires, plugs, water pump, head gasket, top seal, thermostat, and fuel filter, IT RUNS!!!!!!!!!. I was pretty psyched as this is my first motor and I'm not very mechanically experienced. But what the heck, the motor was free, so what are a couple hundred bucks for parts and time spent to gain some experience? Now that I had it running in a garbage can, I have some questions. First of all, she smokes, a lot. I put in the recommended one quart of oil to six gallons gas. I think thats' like a 24:1 ratio, is that right?? I just realized after further reading that I didn't use the TCW-III oil recommended for outboards. Am I using the wrong oil/too much and is that why it is smoking so much?? I read on one post that 40:1 is good for Evinrudes pre 1965. HELP!!!! Also, my motor was just running in a garbage can for a few minutes and it was just spitting water. Should there be a more steady flow of water and will it improve if it is in a body of water rather than a garbage can??? Any help is appreciated and I'm sure I'll have more questions. After all......I'm a rookie.

welcome to I boats
it's going to seem like a lot of smoke even with the correct oil (I would change that out (may not hurt but TCW-III is way better)). Personaly I am staying with 24:1 of 1 qt per 6 gal. fuel. The old girl is going to smoke but you wont notice so much on the lake at WOT. I have a 1958 35 hp that was given to me also, they run great. seems like mine just spits water in the barrel also, does it seam like its getting hot? the water in your barrel will get warm fast so don't run it to long there.
Richard

Sounds OK to me. Firstly yes you should be using TCW-3 oil, it's specially formulated for outboards (TCW = Two Cycle Water-cooled) and will work better than any other oils, if it had existed in 1959 that's what they'd have recommended, and 24:1 is the correct ratio so stick with it.
Secondly, if you have only run the motor in a barrel it will appear smoky, if you were running in the open, moving along, the smoke would dissipate, it can't do this in the barrel so it appears like it's really smoky.
Lastly there should be a spray of water from the relief holes in the back of the leg, not a steady stream as with modern motors but a warm spitting spray. Most of the water exits through the underwater exhaust so you don't see it.
If you're worried that it's not cooling sufficiently try a simple test, open the cowl and put your hand on the side of the cylinders, it should feel hot but not so hot you can't keep your hand there.
And the water spitting out the back should feel comfortably warm, like 50/50 hot & cold tap water.
