Hi I am very new to the boating world I just bout my first boat last month (1995 reinell 203 w/ Alpha one 5.7) I took the boat out on sun and when I put it in reverse off the trailer everything was fine but as soon as I tried to give it gas the motor dies. It ran like a champ going foward all day I tried it again after I let the motor run 40mph for about 5 min and still the same thing. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Might be a lower shift cable (worn) hanging up and engauging the interupt switch. Does it idle in reverse and die when you give it throttle or does it die upon putting it in reverse?

it idles in reverse and dies once gas is applied. When you say worn can it be fix or would I need to replace?

Well if it idles in reverse then it may not be the shift cable. If it was stalling when you shifted into reverse i'd lean towards the lower shift cable. Hmmm Thats all i can think of. Someone else may have some idea or experienced this issue.

Re: stalls in reverse help

I had a stalling issue also, really sucks driving that way especially for a newbie like me in front of people at the ramp waiting for me to get out of the way.

just replaced my lower shift cable last weekend. $75 for new one with all necessary parts included. Changed it in 3 hours (with pauses for a few beers)

Fairly simple if you've turned some wrenches before especially if your cable threads in from the aft side of bellhousing like your alpha 1, my drive is a MR so I had to tap the bellhousing to thread from aft instead of the fore side. They don't sell the old style cable anymore.

It sounds like your shift interrupt is killing the engine when your lower shift cable sticks.

Here's how to check:

After engine stalls, don't move shifter at all, look on the shift plate near engine (mine is mounted on top of back of engine) for a Y shaped assembly with a roller that rides in the top part of Y connected to a switch. If the roller is NOT centered, the switch contacts have closed and therefore killed the engine.

You'll need a really deep 9/16th socket to remove and install the new cable with thin walls, they sell these tools online but I fabricated my own for cheap.

The manuals can be downloaded from the top of the forums' first page, I highly recommend reading through them, they've saved me tons of money that would go to a marine mechanic as I fix all the bugs on my new old boat.

She shifts like a dream now and I can't wait to get the family back out without the stress of issues.

Good luck.

Re: stalls in reverse help

You can "create" an extra deep 9/16 socket by getting a 9/16 spark plug socket which has a hex on it's back end, then put another deep socket over that one. Now you have a long enough reach to install the shift cable end.
BTW follow the instructions in the Alpha 1 manual regarding how deep to set the brass cable end into the bell housing. If you don't screw the cable end in far enough you can't adjust the shift to get reverse gear. I only warn you so you won't have to remove the drive again like I had to.
