Re: stalls in reverse help
I had a stalling issue also, really sucks driving that way especially for a newbie like me in front of people at the ramp waiting for me to get out of the way.
just replaced my lower shift cable last weekend. $75 for new one with all necessary parts included. Changed it in 3 hours (with pauses for a few beers)
Fairly simple if you've turned some wrenches before especially if your cable threads in from the aft side of bellhousing like your alpha 1, my drive is a MR so I had to tap the bellhousing to thread from aft instead of the fore side. They don't sell the old style cable anymore.
It sounds like your shift interrupt is killing the engine when your lower shift cable sticks.
Here's how to check:
After engine stalls, don't move shifter at all, look on the shift plate near engine (mine is mounted on top of back of engine) for a Y shaped assembly with a roller that rides in the top part of Y connected to a switch. If the roller is NOT centered, the switch contacts have closed and therefore killed the engine.
You'll need a really deep 9/16th socket to remove and install the new cable with thin walls, they sell these tools online but I fabricated my own for cheap.
The manuals can be downloaded from the top of the forums' first page, I highly recommend reading through them, they've saved me tons of money that would go to a marine mechanic as I fix all the bugs on my new old boat.
She shifts like a dream now and I can't wait to get the family back out without the stress of issues.
Good luck.
