I have a 91 OMC 5.8 cobra. The starter engages on its own after I start it! You never know when it's going to kick in again on its own! I DO Not mean sticking! I'm an experienced mechanic but can't figure out why it engages on its own after it's running. Starter, solenoid, ign switch all new! This is a problem for the professional boat mechanic unless someone has had this happen to them.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... Obviously the Start circuit has a short to power in it,....

The start circuit runs from the key switch, through the yellow/ red wires to the neutral safety switch in the control, to the slave solenoid at the motor, to the tiny terminal, inboard side, of the starter's solenoid,....

I'm guessin', somewhere the yellow/red wire is rubbin'/ touchin' a red wire,.....
Also guessin', the shake, wiggle, pull test is how yer gonna find it,....

AS Bondo said start under the instrument panel. Since it is a Ford engine you only have 1 solenoid to deal with. I once had a similar problem that turned out to be a screw from the rub rail was the culprit.
