Re: Steering Problems

ok, let's try to be specific here... start with
the boat and motor (again specific) and what kind
of steering system. if you don't know what it's
called, just describe best you can what it looks
like.
I'll help if I can. if not, there's lot's of folks
here who will chip in but we need more info.

Re: Steering Problems

Sorry about my english. I will try to explain better. What do you mean what kind of steering.
I have a Mariner 90 HP 1989. I do not have a hydraulic steering, it's just a steering cable connected to the engine and the other side to the steering wheel mechansim. I hope I'm more specific now and you get better idea what I mean.
Thanks again

Re: Steering Problems

Edit all:
Ok, if you release the steering cable at the engine and turn it by hand, does it move freely?
And, when did this happend? Recently or after you did something or was it like this when you bought the boat?

Re: Steering Problems

Thanks Bear,
No I haven't try it without the steering cable so I don't know if it's ok without the cable. What I did I Have change my boat recently and I moved my outboard engine to the new boat. It was ok on the old boat. But as I mentioned before with the new boat I replaced the steering cable the steering wheel mechanism and now it's stiff.
Thanks

Re: Steering Problems

Look at this picture:
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/images/MERMAR/803147/SB.png
Item #9 is the swivel pin/tube. You may have to put some grease to it.
Edit again: If it was working properly I doubt it has to to with lack of lubrication. Thats good for you. Belive me! Now I have to think before I post again. Then translate. It will take a while :D
This is what I had in mind for you. (click)

Let's wait to hear from you again to find out if you can turn the engine or steering wheel easy when you unhook the steering cable at the engine. Maybe the steering cable need to be rerouted because of too sharp turns.

Re: Steering Problems

6040,
"Bear" may be on the right track. The vertical steering shaft that runs through the transom bracket on the motor could be starting to "freeze up".This is caused from lack of lubing(grease fittings),corrosion/rust,bad seals between the shaft and the bracket. This is a common problem with Mercury/Mariner made in the 80's that are used in saltwater.Like Bear said, disconnect the steering arm from the motor and try to turn the motor by hand.If the steering moves freely, but the motor does not,the forementioned is most likely the cause. ;)
