Re: Stop Immigration Now!

I am with Rolmops on this.

1. Every time the USA has suspended human rights in the interest of "national security" we have been very embarrassed later at our hypocrisy.

2. With the exception of those descended from people imported against their will and those whose ancestors were here before the immigration of Europeans, Africans and Asians we are all immigrants or descended from immigrants. Would you have us all "deported" because the original Americans objected to us? If our ancestors came here more than 200 years ago, they were "illegals", too.

3. Our government is trying to stem the tide of illegal immigrants already, so no petition would have any effect.

4. I really object to the attitude of too many Americans that they insist that their human rights not be infringed, but if it is inconvenient to them they don't mind denying rights to others.

5. Spanish, and its variations, was spoken widely in this country, by immigrants, for 200 years before English speakers began to trickle in. Several native languages had been spoken here for tens of thousands of years before that.

I don't object to English as our official language, but it is not about it being our natural language, it is about power to force others to conform to our ideas and our culture.

I find nothing attractive in this "petition".

If this petition was more directly aimed at ILLEGAL ALIENS , then I could support it.

But this petition seems to denounce all imigration, and that is definitly not what this country is all about!

Re: Stop Immigration Now!

There is BIG difference between legal and ILLEGAL immegration.

My great grandparents came to this country LEGALLY. My father in law just beat out the Nazi's to get here. They didn't try to sneak across a border and spend the rest of their lives running. They embraced America and all it stood for.

They learned the language.

They became citizens.

They were/are probably better citizens than anyone I know.

I am in the hotbed of illegal immegration, here in AZ. The Border Patrol catches 800,000 (in the Tucson Sector alone) per year and they figure that is about 10-15%.

The difference is: these people DO NOT want to learn the language or become citizens.

THey want to work-true. However, they would like to return home, when they have enough money. They used to be able to do that, when we had guest worker programs. The liberals saw to it that those programs went away, because they felt they were "degrading". How can they be degrading if they were what the people wanted, that were affected by them?

Re: Stop Immigration Now!

Oh sure.. Just let all the immigrants in.. Legal, illegal, it don't matter... No problem.... We've got a place for them...

We'll send them all to live with Toad.... :D

On a serious note..... Yes, immigration should be stopped, at least for the time being...

Given the circumstances with reguards to the "war on terrorism", and the fact that those responsible for the terrorist attacks on 911 came to the USA and stayed here legally.... To me, it's a no brainer.....

I'll go a step further... Anyone who is not currently a legal US citizen, should be rounded up and shipped out ASAP, all later "embarrassment at our hypocrisy" be damned.... We've been embarrassed before, and we'll be embarrassed again, so I don't see embarrassment being a legitimate issue, especially where "National Security" issues are involved... Cost of doing business...

Don't come crying to me when another terrorist attack imminates from our own soil...

Like it or not, the population is forecast to rise from 290MM to 500MM between 2003 to 2050. I doubt a petition will do any good.

Perhaps I should have said, ". . .ashamed of our illegal and hypocritical acts."

Nobody here has spoken in favor of allowing illegal immigration. Objecting to the petition is not the same as favoring illegal acts of any kind.

"We don't really have freedom if we would deny it to others."

TOAD: Glad to see you here, Brother. It's good news to me. :D

Re: Stop Immigration Now!

Being a citizen does not mean you wont be a terrorist. Look at Tim Mcveigh at Oklahoma bombing.

My wife is currently a non citizen living here as a legal resident from Thailand. She also is frustrated at the amount of spanish spoken here. She went to school to learn more english. These are free classes that anyone can take.

Stopping immigration isnt required, just better checking of the ones trying to get in. Now, I wholeheartedly agree ILLEGAL immigrants must be stopped NOW. I would put the military on it, one guy with a gun every 100 yards on the border.

Ken

A friend of mine that is with the USBP recently told me that eight people from Yemen were recently apprehended on this side of the border mixed in with some Latinos. They had $40K in cash on them.

That scares the HE!! out of me.

It has NOT been widely reported, for obvious reasons.

Even the illegal gets my respect for trying to better himself and his family.
However, when caught it should automatically mean a deport.

Legal immigration is another matter. They have my respect and support.

Yeah Toad, you would have left for the wrong reason. Happy holidays.

Re: Stop Immigration Now!

JB hinted at an important lesson for all Americans. Through our history the very worst has been brought about in us when we as a nation have been motivated by fear (witness McCarthyism...the civil rights issues in the 60's...and perhaps the destruction of many civil liberties after 9/11). Hate and mass-mob thinking ('throw out hose camel jockeys blah blah blah') will do nothing for our security and only make us morally weaker as a nation.

Do not forget why America is the greatest country in the world. Do not forget that America is always at its best when we are motivated by courage, thinking, and opportunity. And of course, never forget that we have brave men and women who fight for these ideals right now. Do not tarnish their sacrifices. God Bless Y'all.

..This is crap. Signing this would be unamerican. Thanksgiving is just now behind us - so slow down and rethink about what the true meaning of Thanksgiving is.

Re: Stop Immigration Now!

US Immigration History

Immigration has played an important role in American history, and the United States continues to have the most open immigration policy in the world. Before the era of rapid communications and transportation, America encouraged relatively open immigration to settle its empty lands. After certain states passed immigration laws following the Civil War, the Supreme Court in 1875 declared the regulation of immigration a federal responsibility. The Immigration Service was established in 1891 to deal with the big increase in immigration which started in 1880.

The outbreak of World War I reduced immigration from Europe, but mass immigration resumed upon the war's conclusion, and Congress responded with a new immigration policy: the national-origins quota system, passed in 1921 and revised in 1924. Immigration was limited by assigning each nationality a quota based on its representation in past U.S. census figures. Also in 1924, Congress created the U.S. Border Patrol within the Immigration Service.

There was very little immigration over the next 20 years, with net immigration actually dropping below zero for several years during the Depression. Immigration remained relatively low during the 20 years following World War II, because the 1920s national-origins system remained in place after Congress re-codified and combined all previous immigration and naturalization law into the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. American agriculture continued to import seasonal labor from Mexico, as they had during the war, under a 1951 formal agreement between the United States and Mexico that made the Bracero Program permanent.

In 1965, Congress replaced the national origins system with a preference system designed to unite immigrant families and attract skilled immigrants to the United States. This change to national policy responded to changes in the sources of immigration since 1924. The majority of applicants for immigration visas now came from Asia and Latin America rather than Europe. The preference system continued to limit the number of immigration visas available each year, however, and Congress still responded to refugees with special legislation. Not until the Refugee Act of 1980 did the United States have a general policy governing the admission of refugees.

Legal immigration alone in the 1990s likely matched or exceeded the previous historical peak decade of 1901-1910, when 8.8 million legal immigrants were admitted. Adding the settlement of illegal aliens makes the 1990s without doubt the period of greatest immigration in America's history.
