Was wondering if I have to split the top and bittem apart to take out ball gear on outdrive? If the boat was ran out of water what else should I look for? Thanks

yes you have to split the upper from the lower . actually you remove the whole outdrive and in a stringer its fairly easy . mark the ball gears before removing it .

the impeller is located in the bottom of the upper unit .

do you have a manual ? even a seloc manual will be helpful for this .

I agree - I would get the manual, remove the drive and change your impeller. You don't have to remove the ball gears for that: they just separate when you pull the drive.

Be sure to disconnect the battery so that the shift cable does not short out and melt after you remove it from the converter box. OMC also recommends #2 permatex to seal both sides of the water pump on all surfaces. After removing the upper gear housing grip the housing on the quadrant gear in a vise with the housing inverted. That way the pinion housing will stay in the case. Hopefully the pump and pinion shafts are in good condition and not frozen together.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I did pick up a seloc manual. Do you have to drain the fluid in either the upper or lower. It says in manual to drain upper. In the manual it said to disconnect battery and remove cable but before that move outdrive to 15 degree to remove bolts but it later on says to move higher can I reconnect battery to move outdrive up higher or is ther a mechanical way too. Thanks guys

You can drain the gear cases just to service them. When you remove the shift cable just be sure to keep them from the battery or any other battery connections. Hopefully the cable will not be corroded in the intermediate housing. When you re install it use liquid soap to pull it back in.

If you are talking about the box that the cable is in you have to take a screwdriver and release the locking fingers behind the box. They are on the starboard side on the backside and are spring loaded, they keep the cable tight .

I got the cable out no problem. I removed the whole outdrive and have it upright in a stand. I removed tope cover. After that I just lifted the top of the out drive straight up and removed the cable. It seemed pretty easy. My question is am I doing this right it seemed kinda easy. Another question is in the manual it says i have to remove the exhaust housing to insure water pump will pump enough water. Do i have too? Or can I just continue what I am doing.

Another question do I have to remove the ball gear or can I just remove the 4 bolts on bottom of swivel housing.

You do not need to remove the ball gear to do this. I would leave the exhaust housing alone. Just be sure that the intake grill is clear .

I got it out my kit came with the impeller housing and new seals. How do I get the impeller housing out? All of my vanes were broke off. When I go to assemble what lube should I use on water pump and shafts. The shaft tjat came out of water pump was dry real dry. Any other pointers are much appreciated. Thanks guys have a good day

Once you have the 4 bolts out of the water pump puck thing , it should just come out with a tap or 2 . Nothing else is holding it in .

And be sure to clean the splined parts of the shaft really good , both male an female and use a good marine grease on them .

That's a common failure point

If it does not want to separate pull the entire pinion housing and wash the oil off. Lay the housing on the side and work around the pump housing with a chisel until it separates. IF the pump housing is completely enclosed in the pinion housing remove the shims and you should be able to get to the housing from the openings with a punch. It will help if you have someone to hold the pinion housing.

Thanks again guys for all the help. Got it out and put back together. Was wondering if there was something I put inside the shift cable. Like maybe some wd 40 or white spray lithium. Just to while i have it out to help it out.

The shift cable can only be oiled at the area where it is mounted in the converter box. To replace it takes some special tools and of course it has to be removed from the lower gear case.
