Sukuki 115 Monitor Wiring

I just bought a boat with a 1990 dt115. It came with a fried suzuki monitoring guage and a new guage in a box. Unfortunatly the new guage is the wrong part number. It is the guage used in the larger motors that year and is now used in all the motors. I pluged it in but there is an unused red wire from the guage and my water temp light stays on all the time. Does anyone know if that red wire runs the water temp light on this guage and if there is any way to test the rest of the functions? Also, if the red wire does run the temp light, does it do it by grounding the circuit or by putting power to it?<br /><br />Any help would by appreciated,<br /><br />Pete
