We just purchased a 17' boat with a 94 Suzuki DT55TC, 55 hp motor. It was sitting in a back yard, covered, for about a year or two since it last ran. We have completely cleaned the carbs with a carb kit and cleaner, blown it out, changed the plugs, put in fresh oil and took it out for a test run.
It starts well but chirps when you rev it up and let off a little bit and it idles rough. It will run on all 3 cyl when you can get it wide open but drops 1 or 2 cyl at a low rpm underload.
.... any help would be greatly appreciated!

Leah

Leah,

Any luck in getting this fixed? My DT65 is doing the same thing. I've adjusted the fuel/air mixture according to the manual. It has gottong much better but occassionally, without any common factor, it will periodically chirp (backfire).

JC

Do any of the spark plugs look real clean? If so, you may need a head gasket.

Also, try richening up the carbs, it won't hurt. THe "sneezing" is indicative of a lean mixture.

As DJ says the chirping or sneezing is an indication of a lean mixture. Usually cured by a thorough carb cleaning/rebuild. If (we'll assume you did an adequate carb cleaning) you've cleaned the carbs you need to enrichen the idle. The idle adjustment screw meters air on your engine so screwing it in will richen the mixture. Also, check for air leak such as a hose that may have come off somewhere or a bad gasket.

Did you set the float height when you did the rebuild? Did you remove the idle mixture screw clean the orifice with carb cleaner AND compressed air and then reinstall the mixture screw to the manual recommended number of turns out from lightly seated?

Ok... Had this problem with my suzuki '89 dt75... I was quite certain it was carburation but that wasnt it, then thought it was the timing switch, that wasnt it... The motor was VERY low hours and the crankshaft was bent. A lot of people say that this isnt common on suzukis but per the Suzuki dealers, it is.
