Ok I have a 1987 Bayliner Cierra 2855. Powered by a 5.7 GM fairly fresh engine overhaul ( less than 200 hrs ago). The outdrive is the OMC Cobra I believe. I recently came across a really good deal on a mid to late 90's Cobra SX by Volvo complete setup including tilt, transom mounts and everything from another boat. My question is...Are these two units compatible with my configuration? As in will everything bolt on without any major alterations? I've read that these are very smooth and much more reliable. My current outdrive is wearing out and becoming more and more difficult to shift even after being adjusted by a reliable boat mechanic. As of right now it will not go into reverse. Also I believe the Cobra SX had a 5.0 engine in front of it before. Thanks!

You'll want to confirm the newer drive has the correct gear ratio. If it came from a 5.0 it should be close, but if it came off a v6 or I4, it wont work for you.

Well I have managed to get everything switched over, I cannot figure out the gear ratio of the old drive which is an OMC Cobra. The new V/P SX Cobra drive has a 1.66 ratio. I am waiting for the raw water pump and bracket to come in this week to complete this swap. Any ideas as to how to determine the ratio of the old drive? Model number 984757 serial number T0040690. Thats about all I have to go on. I have read that I can do away with the ESA now since this drive has the cone clutches inside. Ive been having issues with the ESA anyhow so thats a plus!

Thanks K-2, I'm not sure thats a very accurate way to determine ratio from what I read. But its a start nonetheless.

With the size of your boat being 28ft or there abouts,, the 1.66 gear ratio is going to be a little bit on low side I believe. You can make up for this in your prop selection. I would start with a 15 or 17 pitch and see if your able to rated RPM at full throttle. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up. I think my current prop is a 16 X 16. It will be interesting to see how this all works out. I've heard these outdrives are much smoother and pretty durable. My old drive was wore out and really gave me alot of trouble the past two years.

What did you use for a exhaust y when doing this switch? Do you have any pictures of your swap. I am thinking of changing my bayliner 28 from a omc baby king to a volvo duai-prop. I was told I can just change the pivot on the omc to a volvo sx and use the volvo bushings?
