I'm trying to find out, how to hook the control
cables up on a 40 hp 1979 merc. I have two cables
from the the box, one is going to the gear control
and the other one is going to the throttle control
When I work the shift on the control box,the
throttle will not move, but it will go in to gear.
The throttle will move slightly with the fast idle
lever. Both cables have been ajusted. The gear control is shaped like a horse shoe when engaged,
It curves around under the carburator, theres a
pin and a carter key hole at the end of it. but
I'm not sure of what goes there. ANY IDEA????

Welcome to iboats.com, 4-barrel.
I don't think we can help much. The best thing to do, would be to sell the original control with it's motor, (or keep it with the original if not selling), and buy one for your motor on ebay or a local boatyard. I'm not saying it can't be made to werk, but would be a rig, and cost more than you'd wanna spend to machine the needed hardware.
