Hi, Great site! Through searching the articles and without ever touching an outboard I have been able to replace the impeller and change the oil on my recently required first boat! I'd like to install a tachometer. I've searched and searched and am still confused about stators and poles. I'm looking at a tach for use on 12 pole outboard. How do I know what I have? I read to count some rectangle tabs on the stator under the flywheel but I don't see any tabs anywhere:confused: I've given up trying to understand and decided to ask here. It's a 79' johnson 70hp 70el79. What do I have? Will the 12 pole tach work? If not what would work? Please enlighten a newbie. I apologize if this has been asked before, i've been searching 2 days and am not any closer to an answer. Thanks!!

I personally don't know your setup, but if you can see under your flywheel or have it removed then you should be able to see the magnets embedded into the outer ring of the flywheel. That will determine the number of poles you have to set the tachometer selector switch to. I have six magnets under my Johnson outboard's flywheel and therefore I have a six pulse setup per Faria manufacturer... Those magnets are used to generate the putput voltage to both run the engine AND charge the battery...

Re: Tach/Stator/Poles I'm Confused

Thanks for the reply! Looking through the service manual I found this:

"Flywheel assembly, which contains six magnets cast into the flywheel 60* apart, and sensor
magnets with two poles 180* apart located in the center hub."

So mine would be 6 pulse like yours then. Is 6 pulse the same as six pole?
Or would it be 2 pole? The 6 magnets and 2 poles is confusing.
It's like a different language to me lol

Ok, searching i found another thread, someone says 12 pole and 6 pulse are the same thing, different wording. Stil don't really understand but I think I've found my answer.
