Tachometer signal wiring question

First, I tested my tachometer and it received power but no signal. So I had local shop replace my bad rectifier and tested stator which is good.

Upon testing after repairs the tachometer still receives power and no signal. So obviously there is corrosion in the remote control area where the tach harness is connected.

Here is what I'd like to know:

I don't want to open the remote control and verify my thoughts that there is corrosion; too much of a pain to deal with opening the remote control.

Now, can I directly run a signal wire from source to the tachometer?

I think I can run wire from the Terminal Block directly to the tachometer. Correct?

Please help, and thank you for the help

Sure, so long as you're certain where it's supposed to connect to in the engine. I'd also disconnect the existing one for now too, on the off chance that it might be shorted to ground somewhere.

Not so obviously, it could also simply be a bad tach. A description of your engine and tach may help, as there's different wiring.

Is your battery charging. If the battery is not charging then the tach cant work, it gets its signal from the charging stator.

Put a voltmeter across the battery and run it. If it comes up to 14 volts or better, the charging system is working.

Battery charges; replaced the rectifier and had the stator checked (it's good)

Re: Tachometer signal wiring question

My main question is whether I can directly run the signal wire from the terminal block to the tachometer? and if I would connect this wire where the yellow/gray wire from rectifier connects with terminal block?

Thanks for all of y'all's help!!

Thanks boobie.

I guess if the tach doesn't register signal with this direct wiring approach then the tach is faulty and I will return (it's a new Faria tach; newly installed rectifier; stator tested good)

Re: Tachometer signal wiring question

Make sure you also have the 12 volts going to tach when you do this. Let us know what happens.

Will do.

My plan:
Use the ignition power source and ground via tach harness from remote control to tach; and run signal wire from terminal block directly to tach; bunny ears and crank while crossing fingers!

Re: Tachometer signal wiring question

could be just a simple wiring issue, dont be afraid and jump in :) your basic gauge will have power, ground and signal wire.. does the gauge light up? most times that can eliminate power and ground unless the light is a seperate circuit. you could that the guage and make a small harness and attach power and ground and make a jumper right to the terminal block and see if the guage registers anything to eliminate the guage. If you have a power probe (best tool ever in my opinion) u can feed the gauge power or ground right at the gauge itself.. did the gauge work prior or is that why your replacing it?

Re: Tachometer signal wiring question

No gauge, only the cutout for gauge.

I receive power to tach b/c the needle moves from rest to "0" upon ignition; plus I have my temp gauge powered via tach (daisychain). So it definitely receives power; just the darn signal; that's why I'm wiring directly from the terminal block to determine if it is a faulty tachometer; easiest way for me personally to determine the tachometers functionality.

Re: Tachometer signal wiring question

Ran wire from terminal block to tach, cranked motor, and the tach responded showing RPMs.

Corrosion inside remote control restricted signal through tach harness; bypassing harness and running directly from block resolved this issue. I still am using tach harness as ignition and ground source for my gauges, but have signal directly from block.

Thumbs up
