transmission on inboard ski boat problems

I have a 91 malibu inboard ski boat with a mercruiser 350 cid engine and a borg warner transmission. There are two problems that I am haveing but I dont know if they are related.<br />First - every so often when I put the transmission lever in the forward position it will not engage but if I let the engine run at 1000 rpm or better it will engage eventually.<br />Second - it just started this, it never really lets the prop sit free. In other words when the engine is running it is like it is still engaged just a bit driving the boat forward.<br /><br />I have checked the oil level and it seems ok. I dont have any experiance with these transmissions so I am not sure where to look for a solution other than the dealer and I know thats going to cost a bundle.<br /><br />Thanks for any help<br />Dan

Malibuf3... Both are internal issues I'm affraid...<br /><br />First problem may be pump related, perhaps a low pressure issue which may be caused by your second problem... It's difficult to say with any certainty...<br /><br />Second problem sounds like a thrust washer is worn out ... maybe your cable is out of adjustment.......you've got to push it forward increasing your rpm before it engages........then when back in the neutral position ....maybe its not coming out of gear at all?????
