Trouble cold starting

Good morning, I have a Yamaha 98 115 2 stroke saltwater series that takes a long time to start when its cold. It starts right up after its warm. It runs and idles great once its started. The carbs have been rebuilt recently. I checked to see if the choke solinoid was engaging, and it is moving the the choke levers, but I did not pull the silencer cover off to see the butterfly's close yet. Is there a recomended starting procedure or any tricks you guy's know of? Is there any thing else that may cause this? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance. Jeff

I know my '98 115 takes a lot of choke right out of the chute. I make sure the fuel bulb is pumped up good and tight and then i hold the choke in while starting and keep it held in after started until it almost chokes of too much fuel. Once it's started and it starts to stall a bit i just bump the choke and let if rev back up - keep repeating until warm - usually takes me about 4 minutes to get it warm and idling fine. If it's much harder than that to get started others on this board can give you a clue on what to check - perhaps a fuel pump getting weak, sync/link on carb needs adjusting, plugs need regapping or replacement?

Pull the airbox cover and verify that the choke plates are closing COMPLETELY. A choke has to shut all the way to work correctly and if its not shut tight it may be your problem. If the chokes are OK, you may try enrichening the idle circuit a tad.

Thanks guys, I pulled the air cover off last night and discovered that the bottom gasket was blocking the choke plate from closing all the way. Fixed it and it started right up.<br />Thanks again<br />Jeff

I have the same engine and mine was not starting because the choke assembly was a little out of alignment and wouldn't close the butterflies all the way. Straightend it out and no more problems.<br />My engine won't start without the full-on choke when cold.
