when using vinegar for cleaning aluminum oxidation, why does it need to be mix 50/50 with water? Also I have some hull cleaner with oxalic acid and Ethylene Glycol n-Butyl Ether. Would it be good to remove oxidation?

oxalic acid works well for iron oxide ( rust ) ..

Alum does not rust :) . .. its good for rust stains.. ( snow bowl is really good for this ).

What is the application ?

what is CLR? I am cleaning up a cast aluminum steering helm that has surface corrosion. It does not seem to be very deep.

Leave aluminum bare

Leave aluminum bare

I have a cast aluminum helm that the paint is blistering off with oxidation under the paint. Since the part is not seen, would I be just as well off cleaning the loose paint off and cleaning the oxidation off and leaving it bare? Maybe coat it with WD-40 to keep the moisture down? My trailer is aluminum and does not have excessive oxidation. From what I read on this site painting can be a process. In this case it does not have to look good.

Re: Leave aluminum bare

Lightly sand or wire brush it...... wipe with vinegar....... prime with zinc chromate (or SEM self etching primer ...... and top coat any color you want .....since it will not be seen.

It's not a tough process and it is cheaper then replacing it. WD will not last as a coating
