Like for testing the seals on sterndrives? I bought one on ebay that's pretty well made. It came with a flat screwdriver, a small plastic toolbox for it all, and basically a basketball air pump with a manifold kind of thing for both vacuum and pressure

You do need to know the pressures & vacuums the pump must reach.
Also very tight lines & no leaking valves.
Not as easy as it sounds when the gauge keeps moving. Bad parts ? Leaky testing parts ?

There is no pressure in the out-drive in operation.
You are just trying to exaggerate any leaks to make them show up quicker.

3-5psi (6-10"Hg) Nominal; 7-10psi (15-20"Hg) Maximum would be reasonable.

Way too much money for what the OP wants to do.Not that anything is wrong with them, except the money, for a one or two time use tool.

I don't see where the OP said he had a budget or stated the number of times they would be used. Could be a full time rebuilder for all I know. You get what you pay for with this sort of tool, IMO. They have cost me less than $10/year.

What is bad in todays depression economy is lots of companies & mechanics just saying............Replace something expensive to pay your paycheck & the owners yacht expenses.

So yes. Carefull testing with enough knowledge & the right tool is needed.

FEW auto dealers do not just replace parts & then say............It was really needed.
