Volvo penta 3.0 grinding noise, won't start

I have a 2000 four winns volvo penta 3.0. Here has been a horrible grinding noise when I try to start the boat. I have replaced the starter twice and it still won't start. I have removed the spark plugs and they have no water on them. I would like to manually turn the crank but my harmonic balancer doesn't have a bolt on the front to turn the engine. How do I turn the engine manually so I can check the flywheel?

Did you look at the flywheel ring gear when you had the starter off? if they are missing, it sure won't turn the engine.
if you have the plugs out, turn the alternator pulley with a tight belt and the engine should turn, if it doesn't, pull the drive and try it again. Could be the drive is locked up.
If it still won't turn, you have engine problems.
