Is replacing the fuel pump on this motor possible without any specialized tools?

I was told that my pump needs to be replaced due to the whine, lack of performance and running hot.

Is it simply a matter of uninstall the old pump, reconnect new pump, fill fuel filter, prime pump a few times and go testing on the water?

All advice and reassurances appreciated!

Dude, if you do some homework searching this forum, you'll find countless threads on the topic of these fuel puimps and the issues you're experiencing. There are also many EXCELLENT threads of folks who have removed, dissassembled, cleaned, reassembled, and re installed their pumps succesfully and have cured their performance and pump whine issues. Save the big money on parts. Spend it on Beer/Booze, ice and gas after you search the archives and find the detailed instructions. Many have pictures and I believe no special tools are required. Think most do the full meal deal in a little over an hour. Good Luck.

Today it will continue to "hum" with the motor shut off. The only way to kill it is to shut off the battery switch.[/QUOTE]

That’s a whole different problem that needs to be corrected first.

Thanks for your reply. I check everything electrical back there that I could think of. The trim pump, bilge and shower seems to be operating fine. On the water the boat performs well except for the whine and it will choke down at WOT.

The mechanic only blames the "bad low pressure pump". It sounds like a ballast on a fluorescent light going bad. It seems to come from the area of the pump -port side of the motor.

Any more guesses or ideas?

I am going to break down te pump this week and see what is going on in there.

Hello Dutofran,

There are many things that could cause your pump to whine and possibly overheat.
The first thing I would check that takes the least amount of disassembly, is the circulation of the vapor reservoir cooling system. On the back of the pump assembly (next to the bracket behind the pumps) is the vapor reservoir. The reservoir is surrounded by an internal cooling jacket. On the bottom of the reservoir is a small 5/16" black rubber cooling hose (in coming cool water) on the top of the reservoir are two hoses, the one in the center is a vacuum line, to the side on the top is the other cooling hose (discharged cooling water). The discharge cooling hose connects to a connection on the exhaust riser or may T into a larger cooling line that eventually discharges out the exhaust riser.
Either way disconnect the reservoir discharge cooling hose from the exhaust riser connection and plug that connection. Next let the cooling hose run into the bilge or extend it over board and start the engine. Allow the engine to idle for a long while. We actually exteded the hose overbaord and went boating for the day and idled around for hours to be sure. If the high pressure pump (pump near the center of the motor) feels cool after 20 minutes of idle (or a day of boating) and the water continues to flow freely then you may be experieincing the same problem I had.
To fix my my whinning hot pump I plugged the 5/16" cooling hose connection at the exhaust riser then plumbed the cooling hose out the boat using a thru-hull fitting. I have not had any issues since I did this four weeks ago.

It's best to do this test with the boat in the water.
If this dosen't work you may have picked up some bad gas with garbage that may be restricting the screens on both pumps and the fuel pressure regulator. These can be disassembled without to much trouble then check the screens and rinse with clean gas.
