VP DP-S upper gear case chatter in neutral

I bought this boat last year (100hrs and it's a 2000). The lower unit works fine. In neutral, there is a chatter from the clutch cones, gear cut, bearing clearance, something. Gimbal is new and fine. U joints fine. On the trailer with props off, just dropping in F or R and the chatter goes away. Even though it is in gear, there is really no load, yet the chatter is gone. What is it? Can it easily be fixed? I'm asking because I need to replace the dipstick and the top cover of the upper gear housing. It is stripped out. It always felt funny as I believe it was overtightened one too many times! On this note, is there anything I need to know about replacing this cover? In the parts book, I see a shim (actually several to choose from) for the bearing/gear clearance I suppose. Does this shim have anything to do with replacing the top cover on the uper gear housing? Any advise from a VP marine tech appreciated. I'm an ASE auto tech so I'll understand your reply! I just don't service these drives for a living.

With diesels, they rattle a lot, because the diesels idle rough. With a gas engine, it usually indicates the engine isn't running properly and has a miss.

What Don said, I have a SX drive and when it had about 75hrs on it I noticed it sometimes rattles in neutral. Has been exactly same for about 1000 hrs now, still working fine.
