Water Intake Screen

Evinrude 1984 E70TLCRD motor:

The water intake screen is completely broken; basically it's like it's not even there.

I found the part number to be: 0320042

Unfortunately, the part is obsolete; or atleast I've had an impossible time trying to find it.

My question:

Can I use a correct gauged square screen to manufacture a water intake screen to protect intake? (cut to appropriate size and adhere with 3M 5200 to outside of intake area).

Not sure how that screen is held in place inside, but you could make one out of some quality stainless steel screen and try it... I have searched the net and there are places you can still buy one. Not cheap, but they do have some... JMHO!

I'd rather have the real component than a jerry-rigged screen.

The screen for the 15" model is 320042 and is NLA. The screen for the 20 " model is 314175 and is still available. What motor do you have ?? According to your model # it's a long shaft and the screen is available.

Wasn't sure which shaft length honestly.
How can I measure to ensure proper shaft length? Without opening up lower unit and disassembling motor?

????---Measure the height of the transom.---A 20" transom should be a long shaft.

Don,t want to stick my nose where it don,t belong, but had the same problem on my 1984 Evinrude 115. On this model the screen on each side has 4 round holes about 5/8" to 3/4" and screen is behind them inside the lower motor housing. Can't get my lower unit off without breaking bolts, so went to Walmart and bought a couple of brass /chrome plated screens for a kitchen sink. Took my time and cut circles a tad larger than so that they almost fit in. Then using the back end of a small screwdriver tapped them in place. They have been working fine for my for about 9-10 months (last fall). Don't know how long they will last, but they are doing the job and I will address a new screen when I HAVE TO REMOVE the loweer unit.

That's where I stand regarding the screen as well. I'm not gonna mess with dropping the lower unit, just to replace the intake screen. I'm gonna wait until I have to replace the water pump; since that has to be removed to replace the screen. Hence my inquiry regarding a jerry-rigged screen.

I might take your idea of that screen type; manufacture it to appropriate size and then adhere with 3M or epoxy on the outside; just as a temporary solution until I have to get inside the unit.
