What is the oil type and purpose?

Hi, I'm looking to top up/change the fluids on my 3L OMC Sterndrive (I believe it's a stringer - boat is 1983 but I'm not sure about the motor age).
Can anyone tell me what type of oil goes in the second one and what the purpose of this is? Also, is the one in the first picture a drain?

Both of those points are for your upper gear case: the top one may have a dipstick attached to it, the bottom one is your fill point. Generally, you open both of them up to drain (drain through the bottom). You also typically fill through the bottom. It's helpful if you have a pump, and they're pretty inexpensive.

80W90 gear lube should be fine for yours.
