Any ideas?? It seems as though Mercury has passed Yam in 4 stroke technology but knowing Yam they should have an answer and hopefully soon.

I don't think Merc has passed them. Yam has been building hi-perf four strokes for years. Merc has done a fine job with their initial offering.

The fued between the two is very interesting though. Yam just suffered a huge court loss on the "dumping" case. It's not the first time they have lost.

Yamahas answer? Time.

As for the court case -- the actual loser has yet to be defined. The buying public perhaps?

Merc has a tradition of being the leader of new "breakthoughs" in design and technology for speed. That is fine and dandy but it doesn't always equal better in terms of reliability. I'm not sure Yamaha has been passed in anything but marketing hype. Superchargers go way back to the 50s...can a Merc powerhead take it in 2004? I'll put my money on towboat usa.

time will tell.
I hope the verado at 93 octane and pressurized intake works.
supercharcing and turbocharging goes back to the 1910 1920 eras.
none work reliably. I gotta see the compressor after several years of customer neglect and the corrosive effects of salt air. I just hope yamahas answer wont include O2 sensors or pressurized induction. I gotta see that motor that requires 93 octane fuel run on 6 month old gas.
good luck and keep posting

Yamaha's answer is a new 250 hp 4-stroke that is similar to the F200-225 design but the timing belt and cam pulley arrangement is different, no timing chains, and it has variable valve timing.

The 250 also requires mid-grade 89 octane fuel to operate efficiently, compared to regular 87 octane.

It has a single throttle body induction system instead of six individual throttles like the F200-225 models.

Interesting answers, I kind of felt the same in that Merc has a lot of tech but often so much that it breaks down.

Does anyone think/know if Yam is developing a 275 or 300 hp Four stroke engine. I'm thinking of repowering my 250 2 strokes but my boat can take twin 300 as well. I've considered the 300 HPDI but would prefer a four stroke.
