Re: what's the best fishin' knot

In my 60 years of fishing I have used palomar, albright, rapala, bimini, double clinch and others that I don't remember. Each at some time failed.

About 20 years ago I learned how to do uniknots. I never had one fail and that is all I use now.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I have never had an "improved clinch" to fail. I have used it for everything from 4lb to 60lb line.

I use the "Worlds Fair" knot. It was introduced at the worlds fair in Knoxville in 75 or whatever year it was. It is a 100% strenth knot. Have used it since it was introduced.

D.

Yes, Kiwi, that is the one.

I use the knot at the bottom of the page to join lines as small as 8# to shock leaders as high as 65#. I use braided superlines for both. The result slips through rod guides easily.

The version for tying leader (or line) to a swivel or lure is half of the bottom knot. With mono it is helpful to double the loop through the eye and use the small line part of the upper knot.

Finally, I use the upper knot to tie line to braided steel or titanium leader material when fishing for fish with teeth.

I am at an age of poor eyesight, so one of the things I really like about the Uniknot system is that I can do it in the dark.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

JB - just a follow-up to thank you for your advice on the Uniknot. I've been using it since reading your post and I like it. It's easy to tie (even in the dark, as you say), looks very neat & tidy and never slips. I'm now recommending it to others also.

Anyone else wanting to learn it - refer to the link in my earlier post on this thread.

Re: what's the best fishin' knot

Since I mostly use "superlines" (Spiderwire, Fireline, etc.), I tie a double surgeons knot (basically a double overhand loop that rolls into a figure 8 when you tighten it) onto the end of my line. I then drop the appropriate size clear plactic bead (to protect the rod tip) and black coastlock snap swivel onto the loop. Then I can switch rigs easily (all lures have a 3 to 5 foot mono or flouro leader tied to them, and they are stored in individual plasctic bags), and the knot has never failed. I use between 30 to 50# line though, since I mostly deep water/wreck/structure fish. The superline are only about 10# test diameter in this class of line, and I usually straighten the hooks before I break the leaders to the hook. I rarely break the main line, only if it frays on some structure. I also have some line that is now going on 5 years old, and it is still as strong as it was new (spiderwire 50# spectra). This is line that is used at least twice to 10 times a month, year round, for 8 to 12 hours a fishing trip, for everything from trout/striper/blue bottom and bucktail fishing, to offshore wreck fishing.

Fireline is holding up good too, I now have some that is 3 years old (30# test flame green). I have access to tensile testing equipment where I work, and both lines (Spiderwire and Fireline)still have full rated break strength.

that's good info there SeaDawg .. an useful too. i find that fireline sheads to much for me .. i like spider wire until i tried POWER PRO .. man oh man , what a great fishin' line ... it ain't cheap & it's hard to find.. but well worth the money & the search....

Lost some fish over the years until I switched to the Palomar knot. Such a simple knot but hasn't failed me yet. Seems to work in a variety of applications.

Re: what's the best fishin' knot

I used two knots. The first I think is called the trilene knot or Jimmy Huston knot: Two passes through the hook eye, five wraps around the line, then back though the double loop you made at the hook.

The second is the uniknot. I use this if I am in a hurry or I can't see. I can't describe this one very well, but it is simple and fast; and you can tie it with your eyes shut.
