When I go to the Dealer to Exchange Powerheads

I called a place to see if he had a powerhead for my 1986 Evinrude 150hp Crossflow. I didn't even give him engine numbers or even tell him it was a crossflow engine but he said he had it in stock. I know they make a looper engine that same year. So my question is does he really know if he has my motor is in stock or is he just trying to get me to his shop? Also how would i know by just the serial number what engine is the right one? If this is really confusing let me know so i can reword it. Thanks in advance!!!

shaun,<br /><br />He probably has both or has quick access to them, both were very popular.<br /><br />The serial number tells all. You can tell by looking the difference between a looper and a CF.

alright ....so all loopers are the same and all the crossflows are as well and i just gotta swap them? i am worried because everytime i go to local marinas they say they need serial numbers even though i tell them a 86 evinrude crossflow 150hp. thanks a lot <br /><br />ps-i found one powerhead for $1450 with a 3 month warranty and one for $1900 with a year warranty... any advice?

You better check that again the only 150's in 1986 .They were all cross flows . As for the dealers wanting the serial #'s and or model #'s every time you go in to get something , you would not believe how many customers i have had that came in saying they had a so and so year model . Just for me to find out after searching for a part that doe's not exist that the motor is actually several years older or newer . And yes there were a number of years that the cross flow v-6's would interchange as were a number of the loopers also .
