1963 evinrude lark v 40hp selectric shift with generator... have wiring diagrams but still a bit confused.. the motor came with all the wires and controls but it also had a 110 plug(like whats in your home) and some extras.. the wiring diagram also shows other things (temp switch, choke switch, and ammeter) i dont have any of those things and the wires that would have went to those things have been cut and taped off. (good thing is, its original wiring so all color codes match. helps alot). it is missing the starter solenoid but thats easily replaced and my boat doesnt have a key but i can get an ignition switch no prob... i guess my question is, if i hook up all the wires i do have (minus the cut and taped off wires) and get an ignition and solenoid, should it run?? or have i gotten myself into a big ole mess???

Well..... nobody knows. It might. That depends on a lot of things, but it can be simplified to fuel, compression, spark.

How long has it been since this engine has bee used? If it's been more than a couple of years you should think about changing the water pump impeller. Also, it's possible the carbs could need to be disassembled and cleaned.

There's a post in one of these sections about resurrecting an engine that hasn't been run in several years which has been elevated to 'sticky' status so it's near the top. Find that, there's sure to be plenty of good information in it for you. Also, think seriously about getting a factory service manual.

Re: Wiring Trouble

thx metric.. i think i saw the post you mentioned. it has been a few years since it was ran so i will definitely go thru all the precautions before trying to start, just want to make sure its all wired up right before i try firing it up! :)

Re: Wiring Trouble

i also had a ? about the starter.. the bendix has a threaded sleeve and it freely spins in and out. is that normal? because it looks like it would cause sum big issues witht the bendix hitting the flywheel properly

It's normal for the bendix to go up and down its' shaft as you rotate it.

Re: Wiring Trouble

thx metric.. heres a before and after pic.. i can spin it freely up to hit the flywheel and down to clear it. i havent tried engaging the starter yet. seems like just the vibration of the engine moving would make it move up or down.. just afraid its not right. have a look and tell me what you think
