Yamaha 115 Power Trim problems

I have the 2-stroke saltwater model 2001 and last month the powertrim from the throttle didn't work the "motor down" function and the motor switch worked intermittantly. The motor mechanic replaced 2 relay switches inside the motor with 2nd hand parts (they are very expensive new in Australia - $A230 each!) and the problem was fixed. Now I have the same problem back again.

Could this be related to something else like the throttle itself or something to do with hydrolics (if they exist on this motor)?

Re: Yamaha 115 Power Trim problems

could be the 2nd hand parts are bunk.
dont get too many problems with these relays unless they have been swimming. i would check all your connections and check your throttle switch for continuity. disconnect the motor wires at the relays and jump them across a battery to isolate a problem with the motor. its a 2 wire motor so just switch them to check the other direction. good luck

Thanks Ben. I'm taking it back to the mechanics tomorrow. They are going to test the electronics as you suggest.

I have a similar problem except mine is with the trim up. It is intermittant and whilst testing at the relays, it refused to play up.

Can anyone tell me if the helm trim switch is a sealed unit or can it be stripped down and cleaned. I believe this may be the problem. The switch is approx $80 AUD.

David

its not a serviceable item dave. make sure to check the switch for continuity before you go to the trouble of removing it.

I have the problem fixed, hopefully permenantly this time. The connections in the helm trim switch were dirty and connection was poor. The mechanic also did a thorough cleaning job of switches in the motor itself. I have yet to test with a long day out but here's hoping.

Re: Yamaha 115 Power Trim problems

I finally got around to sorting out my up trim problem. It was the helm switch. Pulling the control lever apart gets you access to the switch which can be easily removed. The switch has a metal flange holding a rubber boot. To get access to the switch internals, prise off the metal flange, lift up the rubber boot and then prise up the two tabs holding the plastic switch body. From there, remove the small metal switch rocker. Mine had two small black burn marks which I cleaned off with some 1200 wet and dry paper. I also gently scrapped the contacts moulded in the body.

Be aware that testing with an ohm meter indicated a good closed circuit when operating the trim switch. When loaded (connected to the trim relay) the voltage was only 0.6v hence the relay would not kick in. My problem only produced itself when loaded by the relay and "appreared" to work fine disconnected and checking continuity.

David
