Re: yamaha 200 1992 tilt works up but not down

I think I found the fill, a hex cap screw, hard to get at as the boat is in the water. I tried to lower using the manual valve screw but it looks like a slotted head and I had no luck getting it to move (counter clockwise),any knowledge here?

does the tilt motor run?. is this an electrical failure or a hydraulic? usually if there is enough fluid to trim it up there is enough to trim it down.

sounds fine going up.I haven't put a test on the current but am pretty sure it is getting juice. Is the manual valve screw a slot, i can barely see it and it may be stuck? Screwed if I can't get engine down no steerage with twin ob's.

Re: yamaha 200 1992 tilt works up but not down

There is a small connector board mounted on the left side of the block. It has two large wires on each post. One is green the other blue. Take the blue and the green one that go to the trim motor off and ground the blue one. Hold the green one to the battery wire at the start solinoid until it trims to ehere you want it. The down relay is most likely bad and you will have to replace the assembly to repair.

That worked perfectly.Which one is the down relay, and is there anything special I need to know about replacing the down relay?

It is a small black box located on the port side of the block. Mounted on the same bracket will be the starer solinoid.

It is an assembly. The wiring for the down lead is green. Blue is up. Main thing is to disconnect battery before starting to replace and be sure all grounds are hooked up properly. Wires plug up color to color.

Got it. I have a new relay coming Wednesday, will post my result. Thanks again, now that the engine is down I can take my son fishing over the weekend.

Re: yamaha 200 1992 tilt works up but not down

Ok here is the follow-up. I ordered the down relay and pulled out the relay with the green lead thinking it was the down relay, then I noticed my new relay has a blue lead. I put the green lead relay (lower of two relays) back in and replaced the blue lead relay with the new blue lead relay. The motor now trims up and down. Is the green lead relay the down relay and my removal and reattach move a "short" fix? I'm thinking I should probably replace the green lead relay to be sure/safe.

They are the same except for the color of the wire used to activate it. Some models the wire is the same color.

Ok I think I get it, but is the lower of the two the down relay? The lower one has a green wire and your advice on using that for hot and grounding the blue wire worked

Yes the green wire is for down. The green keying wire and the green output wire go to the same relay. Blue Sky. Green Grass is the old saying for techs to remember when dealing with trim wiring.

Re: yamaha 200 1992 tilt works up but not down

Much thanks Ray, just so others might benefit from my situation .... when I ordered the down relay they gave me a blue wire relay (up relay) which I didn't notice when I picked it up and ended up using to replace the up relay. I ordered the down relay again and this time the parts guy realized there were two parts numbers and is sure he odered the down(green lead) this time. Will post result.

They are electrically the same. If you hook both green wires( one to the trim motor and the keying wire) to the relay you have, it will work fine. Good help is hard to find.
