I have been reading through these forums for a few hours now and I am convinced I have a fuel related problem.

I have a 2001 Yamaha 250hp 0X66 (EFI) Saltwater Series.

It has just recently started to give me trouble when getting on a plane sometimes. It also will lose power randomly (8-12mph). Before I begin applying the suggestions I have read here I have a few questions.

Can I perform the fuel pressure tests out of the water with a hose hooked up to the engine?

What should my WOT RPM be on this engine?

What octane gas should I be using?

What plugs would you reccomend?

Also, there is a little fin under the cavitation plate, I beleive it is called an anode? Well, mine fell off while running. Is it OK for me to use / work on the outboard with this peice missing?

Link to picture of 'anode': http://www.eshop.msn.com/trackoffer.aspx?p=1085:1:1:9651:7:9651: 0:9:1:0:0&merchId=2776&invMerchModel=326790862

Thanks a ton.

Hello
what is the maint history? does it get maint or just when it breaks? how many hours or about how many does it have? does it have a hull mounted fuel water seperator? have you checked the engine mounted fuel filter? is the red ring in the filter floating. answer me some basics and ill do what I can to help. and being honest what is your skill level with a wrench?
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha 250 0X66 SS fuel problems?

I have only had the outboard for about 6 months. It has gotten regular maint from the dealership since purchased. This will be my first maint on it.

It has 94 hours.

It does have a hull mounted water seperator which I planned on replacing as step one.

I will check the fuel filter you mentioned when I get home this evening.

I am no outboard mechanic but pretty good with a wrench. I used to tear into my old 85 Johnson 225 regularly. It is still running according to the guy I sold it to! :D

Thanks for the help.

hello
do you have a service manual? there are some maint actions that must be performed every 100 hours. 75 if you troll much. to many times the maint gets gundecked.
the vapor seperator has a filter that must be serviced. the low pressure pumps need to be rebuilt or replaced every 3 years or so. the O2 sensor must be cleaned , that one can smoke a piston do you use ring free? the paper engine filter should be tossed every year. if yoiu have much trash or water in your hull filter you will need to service it every 10-20 hours till it comes out clean. the remote oil tank filer as well as the engine oil tank trap needs 100 hour/annual maint.
get a manual and follow it closely
good luck and keep posting

post me back if ya have any questions
