Yamaha outboard stalls under load and WOT

Thanks in advance for any help. <br />1989 yamaha 2, 2hp, 2 stroke. Engine has approximatly 20 hours run time or so on it. The Engine Idles fine, but when I give it WOT, it slowly loses rpm till it dies. The spark plug is new, gas is good, anyone have any idea where to start to look?

Sounds like the main jet in the carb is clogged. Remove and disassemble and clean the carb with carb cleaner AND compressed air.

Okay, I completely disassembled the carb, cleaned it out, still dies at WOT. It will run for 5 seconds or so, sometimes 10 seconds, then lose rpm till it dies. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.

is the tank breather open? kinda sounds like its running the bowl low on gas. you could pull the line from the carb and make sure the fuel flow is good.

thanks for the response. I too think it sounds like the fuel can't keep up. I did take the fuel line off, and the fuel runs freely out of the line. And the cap breather is loosened all the way. <br /><br />Upon disassembly of the carb, the carb is spotless, no buildup whatsoever, no gunk etc. I am beginning to think it may be the ignition system, but know nothing about that to know where to begin to look. The ground wire and everything looks fine, so I eliminated that already.

hello<br /> sounds like its running out of gas. or the exhaust port is clogged.<br /> recheck all your fuel system. try closing the choke while its dying.<br /> good luck and keep posting
