How to Install Your Solar Postlite
Video TranscriptToday we’ll be performing a Postlite installation for a stationary dock. These are the tools you will need for today’s project; 1 self-tapping metal screw #5 by 1 inch for each Postlite to be installed, an appropriate school driver or bit for that screw, a cordless or electric drill, a 3/32 drill bit, and optionally duct tape for shimming purposes and a utility knife.
Remove the product from the packaging and any protective film covering the solar panel. Underneath the top of the Postlite is a series of switches which will allow you to choose anyone of six colors of illumination. Only one switch should be turned to the on position at any given time. Turning on more than one switch may result in the Postlite not operating properly. Once the color has been sent, simply screw the top back onto the Postlite.
Expose the unit facing the sun for 8 to 10 hours of sunlight or if weather conditions don’t permit this, place the product 12 to 14 inches away from a strong spotlight for 2 to 3 hours. Once the product is charged, cover the solar panel completely to ensure that the unit illuminates in the absence of light.
For multiple installations, make sure that all Postlites are placed 4 to 6 feet apart. This is to ensure that one Postlite won’t affect the solar sensor of another. For your installation you should also keep in mind that Postlites placed in areas with poor sunlight exposure will not illuminate as well as those with good sunlight exposure. You must now determine which Postlite adapter is best suited to your application. Begin by trying each of the three sizes of adapters that are included with your Postlite. If an adapter is too small try the next larger and so on. If one adapter is too small and another is too large, simply wrap a layer or two of duct tape around the end of the post to make the pipe slightly larger. Place the chosen adapter onto the post until it rests on top of the post. Using a drill and a 3/32 drill bit, use the screw hole in the side of the adapter as a guide to drill into the post. Install a #5 by 1 inch self-tapping screw through the adapter and into the post to secure the adapter in place.
Assemble the lens section and cap to the adapter by threading onto the adapter and hand tightening. Now let’s go over some key points about installing a Postlite. Plan your Postlite placement to be a minimum of 6 feet apart. Determine which adapter-base best suits your application. Drill a 3/32 inch hole through the post wall. Secure the chosen base to the pipe with a #5 by 1 inch self-tapping screw. Re-attach the lens section to the base. Set the illumination color as desired. Allow a minimum of 8 to 10 hours of full sun to charge your Postlites.
