The Industry leader in preventing ice damage for over 40 years!

Industrial strength, energy efficient and cost effective! When a De-Icer motor is submersed it pushes water to create a flow of warm, bottom water using an open propeller design. This moves the warmer water to the surface to create open water areas. The industrial strength design of this dock de-icer has a single open propeller which allows for greater water flow. The coated stainless steel cage/propeller guard also catches large debris and reduces the likelihood of clogging.

Kasco Deicers come complete for suspended operation from a dock or boat in either a vertical or angle position - it can be hung with the provided ropes or purchase a universal dock mount, or horizontal float mount to produce an elongated pattern of agitated water while a vertical position produces a circular pattern.

Each De-Icer boasts the following staples of Kasco equipment:
  • Highest efficiency design for low power consumption versus competing units. This reduces the operating costs over the entire life of the unit and generates excellent flow per kW of power used.
  • Longer-life top and bottom ball bearings
  • Comes with two 20' braided nylon mooring lines attached
  • Environmentally friendly oil-filled motor with a hard-face internal mechanical seal and external lip seal for protection against leaks.
  • Flood oil lubricated for excellent heat dissipation.
  • Highly efficient, lower power consumption than competitive equipment
  • Superior dependability in salt-water or other corrosive environments. All external metal motor, float, and hardware components are of stainless steel composition and protected by a sacrificial zinc anode.
  • Requires minimal maintenance. We recommend cleaning the stainless steel motor housing once or twice per year and replacing the sacrificial zinc anode when visibly corroded.
  • ETL listed to stringent UL and CSA Safety Standards
  • Made with pride in the U.S.A.
  • 2 year warranty

[Narrator] Today’s Kasco de-icers are the results of over 40 years of experience in the design and manufacture of superior water agitator equipment. Their main use is the prevention of damaging ice in marinas and harbors or for wet storage of boats in the winter. They can also be used to prevent oxygen related winter kills, attract water fowl in winter and improve the water quality during the summer in stagnant areas.

Kasco de-icers work simply by moving warm bottom water that is heated by the earth to the surface. De-icers can be mounted by rope suspension, a universal dock or piling mount or by a horizontal float. They are different type of ice damage to protect against. One of the most common is ice jacking or lifting of pilings. Lifting damage can occur anytime ice and water fluctuate. The most common cause of lifting is the tide however lifting damage is common in the Great Lakes region where the weather and wind changes can cause smaller but more rapid changes than tides.

Jacking damage can also occur on any body of water regulated by man. Repair costs are not only limited to physical damage but also the downtime of dock facilities and time spent obtaining necessary government permits. Maintaining an ice free zone in and around dock structures is your very best protection against jacking or lifting damage.

[Speaker2] Here on the Wisconsin River below the Weyerhaeuser Dam. I put my dock in the last summer. Put the nice heavy-duty dock in thinking I wouldn’t have a lot of trouble with ice. It turned out to the river kind of chewed it up and spit some polls right out at me. So I called up Kasco Marine and told them my situation, and they came up with some ideas for me.

Okay I used the dock mount. All I’ve done is adjust it mildly around to keep the ice going, it has worked very well. And what they did to work absolutely fabulous. It took the ice out, within two weeks it was completely gone. It looks like it’s going to work very well.

[Narrator] Ice expansion pressure is a vastly underrated damage risk. The size of a body of water is directly proportional to the risk potential. The larger the body of water the larger the potential damage risk will be. Although maybe prefer to maintain and ice free zone around the dock structure it is also possible to limit damage risk with an open water buffer zone. Kasco de-icers placed correctly between docs and expanding ice can relieve damaging expansion pressure.

During harsh winters with thick ice and heavy snowpack your pond can experience a fish die off or Winterkill due to low oxygen levels. The heavy snow and ice prevents sunlight from penetrating into the water causing the existing aquatic vegetation to die off. As the visitation die, the decomposition process uses up much of the available oxygen in the pond. Only a small percentage of the ponds total surface area needs to be ice free to prevent winterkill situations. The cold water will become oxygenated by coming in contact with the air and prevent winterkill on your pond.

Water quality during hot summer weather is an increasing problem for marinas and waterfront developments. Sheltered water behind docks or under walkways where wind and current cannot reach tends to become stagnant and dirty. As a result algae and odor problems often develop destroying and otherwise pleasant outdoor experience. The use of Kasco de-icers during hot summer weather to create a man-made current helps mother nature with her natural cleaning action for improved water quality.

Back in the late 80s, Kasco sent our de-icing equipment and company personnel 312 miles north of the Arctic Circle to help with the whale rescue off the coast of Barrow Alaska. Although Kasco Marine had no official invitation we were convinced our equipment could do the job. So Kasco decided to crash the party. At first local officials did not take Kasco’s de-icing equipment seriously but they quickly became enthusiastic after seeing the great results Kasco delivered. There was also a friendly reception from the whales. Kasco’s 3/4 horse power de-icer on a horizontal float help maintain ice free breathing holes for the trapped whales at temperatures consistently reaching -30°F.

So we’ve seen how Kasco deicers can be used for multiple applications. Kasco is the industry leader in ice control engineering. These energy savers are the standard from the people that know de-icing.

[Mazzola] The Chicago Police Marine unit, Sergeant Mazzola , this is officer Bill Brown. And you can see in the background we have our water-movers working and we’ve had these for approximately six years. We haven’t had any problems and this year Officer Brown put them in all by himself. Bill you could go ahead and tell us what happened there.

[Bill] We carry about 25 - 26 in water when the whole system is fully operational. It keeps a nice ice shelf all the way around the perimeter of the boats. So we are able to move the boats. We have to bring the boats to the wall in order to fuel them during the winter so we can take the boats out and keep us operational all year round. It’s been a very reliable system that we have going here. It keeps us functioning and I don’t know what we would do without them.

What's up guys? Today I am out here doing something that I don't normally do. I'm giving a review of an item that I purchased for hunting. This is the Kasco De-Icer. Up in Minnesota here we get a lot of ice and it ruins our season, cuts it off early so I have to say that I am very pleased with my purchase and I do recommend it to any other hunters or fishers that do lose their season to an early ice out so I am able to keep 5 inches of ice open right now. This is probably a 30 yard by 20 yard hole right now. The thing is running off a generator and it is pretty quite. You can keep it running while the birds are around.

Here's the whole de-icer overall. Its a motor that you put on your motor but I actually built this stand for it. You can change the angle depending on the depth of the water. I had mine in shallow water so I tipped it on its side a bit but you can do it straight up and down in deeper water. Overall if I had to change anything, I might go with the 1/2 or 3/4 horse power version. I went with the 1 horsepower and it draws quite a bit of power. 13.5 running amps when its all going in the water and not all generators can manage that so the 1/2 or 3/4 are a bit more manageable if you are using a smaller generator.

De-Icer by Kasco Marine - Energy Cost (Video)

See how the energy costs are calculated for a De-Icer ... read more

Today I am going to answer the question, how much does it cost to operate a de-icer for a dock or a pier. I'm going to go through this very quickly. So here you pick the size of the unit that you want. We are usuing a 3400 De-Icer where the HD actually refers to the 240 volt but we are using a 120 volt - which is our most common application. Based on the chart that I showed you on the last screen, it is 6.7 running amps. Then we determine the hours per day, I'm going to have it set up on a timer that is actually controlled by the temperature, so I'm going to choose 8 hours a day. I've looked at my energy bill to determine that its 0.1455 cents per kilowatt hour. Then I'm going to determine the months. I'm going to run it in December, January, February, and March. The horsepower of our unit is the most common unit, which is the 3/4 horsepower and 120 volt. And this gives me a result of $27.03 per month. Really not a bad cost but it is something you have to weigh out.

The next thing to consider is, what if we were to make a change and go with the 1/2 horsepower model which changes your running amps to 5.0, then because we are in a different climate, and its not uncommon to find a rate of .11 cents per kilowatt hour and maybe we only need to run it 3 months per year. Now that brings our cost down to $15.25 per month. This is a really low cost for the benefits that you can get from running a de-icer.

This is something that you need to evaluate. I want to touch on a few of those other things - with the stars next to them. First, check your kilowatt rate. The Power Factor is measured on motor efficiency. For a Kasco unit, use .95. If you are using other brands you will want to compare that as you see fit.
