I'm a complete rookie with boats but i ended up with a 15ft fishing boat 1981 monark and took it out a few times and fell in love with boating. After enjoying it the motor died block shot (55 chrysler). I gave a guy 1,500 and boat for 1985 bayliner with a 85 force it seems to run fine and the boat is very clean garaged kept. Now that its mine i'm hearing people dis the bayliner and motor. Why? and is there things i should check for to make sure their ok? Boat has been in storage for 5 years. And what is decarbing? Any information would be very appreciated.

My neighbor had the same combo for years, and made money when he sold it. I am in the "same boat" with you, I bought a Galaxie with an OMC I/O all everybody can say is "you should have bought a Merc." Right up until I ask them about their payment. You might try that when they dish out a helping of advice.

Do a search for "Bayliner" or "Force" here on iboats, or any other site, and you'll get the same stuff.
I own a 1650Bayliner Capri,1989.
Werks great.Had problems with fuel pump, carb goo, deck and stringer rot, and spun hubs..Other than that she's been a good old boat.
But Bayliners of this vintage have zero tolerance of poor maintainence. carbon builds-up inside the engine, on the piston crown and ring lands, exaust ports and plugs. It needs to be periodicly cleaned out, or it will eventually do damage to your engine. It may have been what got to your Chrysler55 (Same engine as force 50,'cept for paint).
Weak points of the 60-125HP Force engines is the exaust port plates, tend to warp, leak, and take-out the lower piston. The older ones had lots of ignition problems. But all engines have thier own "quirks", so don't loose sleep over it..Just do a search ,read, learn, and maintain your new boat, and your chances are better than most, to enjoy her.
