I've had no experience with Force engines as I have always owned Mercs or Johnsons :) . I have an opportunity to purchase a boat with a '95 Force
120 horsepower. Supposedly in great condition with 200 hours, any idea if this a decent motor and what problems I can expect. What year did Force change over from Chrysler to Mercury. Thanks for your input.

At least you ask before you bought a FORCE . I am not knocking Force at all but I am no fan of this motor.

Click on (search) type in (force). This should help you.

Force is one of those 70/30 engines.

70 % Unhappy
30 % Happy

Good luck with your decision... :D

Re: '95 Force 120

do your homework and you won't get burn.and that is with any outboard.first check compression on all cylinders, then get a meter set to volts and check chargeing system, then remove the lower unit screw and check lower unit oil, then look at the engine to see how clean it is .also the next important thing is to take it for a ride, check gears, also reverse.shut the engine and restart it.open it up on the water, check and see if it pumping water from rear.good luck. :) :)

Re: '95 Force 120

Chrysler sold thier outboard division in 84 to US Marine, a devision of AMF (same as bowling ballz and harley were).I think it was 1992 when Merc aquired the line, but am unsure (it was around then). Even tho your are getting a Merc-owned engine, it's still the old Chrysler design with updated ignition.
Merc Dropped the entire Force line due to tougher emission standards placed on the industry in 2000.
It was a money descission,as they would've had to re-design the Forces (which were dirty runners) to meet these tougher standards. And besides, they still had the original Merc/Kekiefer strain, which was closer to the emission guidlines by design.
Parts are still available for now, under the Quicksilver and Sierra Labels. But day by day, more Force shops are closing thier doors,or selling thier Force shelf stock on Ebay.
I suspect that in 5 years or so, parts will become an issue.
There have been many threads here allong the subject lines of "Force, love or hate?" or simular. They tend to get the hackles raised on some folks (like me), so I won't comment on what I think of my Force engine. After all, I have done so one too many times, and the point is moot.
