Hi all, I have a boat with 45 hp chrysler and it has no reverse gear. It goes forward wether I have it in forward or reverse. Also something is slipping in the lower unit...if I give it a little gas it move ok but any more than about 2 or 3 mph and it slips. It is not the prop slipping...I checked that. Any ideas are welcome and appreciated. thank you,

Rich

Rich is the shifter shaft at the powerhead going down to the lower unit moving freely up and down?

Re: No reverse....slipping gearbox...

Hi Norman, Yes the shifter shaft seems to be moving freely. I did disconnect it where the long nut holds the two pieces together when I removed the lower unit. I thougt i put it back where it was. Would one or two turns of the nut either way make a difference to cause no reverse. As far as the slipping goes the guy I bought the boat from said it was a rubber piece in the lower unit causing it. does this sound possible? do you think the part that is causing it to slip would also cause it to go forward in reverse gear? thanks,

Rich

Re: No reverse....slipping gearbox...

Rich there is no rubber piece in the lower unit just 3 gears a shifting fork and a clutch. one or two turns on the coupler nut is no big deal. any signs of water or metal in the l/u oil? last one i saw that didnt shift the hole in the l/u that the shifter shaft ran through was cruded up so bad that it was binding the shaft. how did you check your prop for slipage? did it work in reverse before you droped the l/u?

Re: No reverse....slipping gearbox...

Norman, I don't know if it shifted into reverse before as this was the first time I had it in the water. No signs of metal or water in the oil either. As far as being gunked up it was and seems like it is working right when I look down at the gears from the top of the lower unit. It does still seem to be binding a bit sometimes pulling it up into forward though. do you think this could have caused the slipping? Thanks for the help.

Rich

Rich anything is possable those old chrysler l/u are simple to work on you will need a seal kit and a manual for it. if worse comes to worse you can allways do what i did on mine find a pre merc 50hp force l/u bolts right on and moves the water inlet out from behind the prop

Rich about 1984 chrysler sold the marine divison to u s marine (ie force)u s marine was later bought by merc. merc used there igniton systems and l/u on the force motors after they took over. so a pre merc force will have u s marine on the i d tag

Re: No reverse....slipping gearbox...

Ok, I got both gears and neutral now. It was a combination of it being crudded up and I adjusted the linkage...maybe it stretched over time...anyhow reverse and neutral work great but when I put it in forward the propeller doesn't spin very fast and I can hear noise in the lower unit like maybe it isn't engaged all the way in gear. Is this possible? Or could could something be worn that would affect forward gear only? Thanks,

Rich

Re: No reverse....slipping gearbox...

Ok, I got F-N-R now, just needed a little more adjustment. It does seem to whir a little when shifting although i don't know if it is slipping yet as I haven't had it under load. I will try it out this weekend hopefully. I have one question though: how do you slow down the idle on this beast? Chrysler 45HP. I have a manual on the way but would like to adjust the idle now. I tried adjusting the screw holding the arm going under the flywheel but it did no good. There doesn't seem to be any place around or on the carb to set it. Thanks,

Rich

Rich dont move the arm going under the flywheel that is for ignition timming look just below it and you will find a screw with a lock nut on it that is the idle adjustment. good job on your l/u

Hey Norman 158, You told me in another post that you had a prop that would fit my engine. How much are you asking for it? Thanks,
Rich
irich@cablespeed.com
