9.9 Force with ignition problems????

I've got a 1984 9.9 Force. At the beginning of the season it ran great for about 10 minutes. Then it blew a head gasket. I replaced the head gasket and the impeller, althought the one in there looked really good. The cylinders looked good when I took the head off, I also checked out the fuel pump and the exhaust chamber while I was working on the motor. All looked good.

Now the problem. After the repair it would start right up then die soon after. I checked the fuel level, cleaned out the carb, and checked the points gap. All seemed good.

Then it wouldn't start at all. One cylinder would not fire. I switched the condensor and the points between the two cylinders and still it won't fire in the same cylinder. I think it's a coil but does anyone see where I might have gone wrong in checking out this engine.

I don't want to spend much on this guy, this is why I'm posting this question. This motor is just a couple of days from becoming a boat anchor it I can't fix it cheaply.

One more thing the compression came out 80 and 78.

Thanks for any help.
Cam

PS: I will probably be looking for a good condition 9.9 in the Detroit area even if this engine gets fixed. We just need to have some faith that the engine won't crap out on us. So if anyone knows of a good used one, let me know.

Just reading about a Force won't make your engine run like one. :D

Well how about a source for new or rebuilt coils for a Force?

Cam

Cam,Compression is pretty low but adaquate.
I think you are right dont spend too much money
on the little beast.Fairwinds Marina is a Chrysler/Force dealer at:www.fairwindsmarina.com
(Hold on to your wallet)also NAPA has some outboard parts dont know if they do yours.
Make your new motor a good name brand.E/J,Merc,Yamaha,Suzuki,etc etc.stay away from the orphans and oddballs.I think you will find that any of those motors will be faster and more efficient than your Force on its best day.
Good luck.

Thanks
I would have never bought this eninge. It's my girlfiend's. She got the engine with an inflatable boat for 500 a few years ago. The boat is in great shape and she got 3 years out of the engine. So I guess not too bad. I'll try out that web site to see if they have any mag coils for this thing.

As soon as we find a 9.9 Johnson or Merc I'm sure we'll buy it.

Cam

Your low comp on both could be the gauge, but I'm in agreement, that is of little sigificance right now, because it sould still run fine.
Be certain you have fire to both plugs. Having done that,I would get a new transfer port gasket, and a set of exaust port gaskets, and pull these covers, and inspect the mating surfaces, corrosion contant. And in the case of the exaust port,surfaces,carbon-clogged exaust ports, and piston skirt condition (which can be seen once you have the plates off).
I make my own flat gaskets, except for head gaskets, using stock gasket material of the same thickness as original. It's mucho cheaper that the blister-packed gaskets, and it's even kinda fun to make them...Like a manly form of arts-n-crafts :D
But seriously, not too difficult, provided you have the nescssary tools, like ;
EXACTO-KNIFE
SINGLE_EDGE RAZOR BLADE
BAL PEEN HAMMER (SMALL 2 or 3OZ)
LEATHER HOLE PUNCH (for making the bolt holes)
There are tricks of the art, but I think I'll make a "GASKETS-101" post on the subject.

Good luck.
