I have pretty silly problem. The engine cover to a 87 Stingray is closed and it's electrically operated. The problem is the battery is under the hatch and I can't open it. Is there a manual release? A hand crank or a cable to pull? Or do I have remove the hinges?

stingrayboats.com has a forum. I imagine you will get your most informed response over there. I can't imagine there isn't an override mechanism.

ok I can't get into the Stingray forums cause I don't have the hull id with me. Boat is at a different location,

If anyone has any info on how to get the rear hatch open please help.

pfd,

I doubt there is an emergency release. On mine (not a Stingray) there are three options:

1) I can disconnect a simple pin in the hatch ram by reaching through an access panel in the rear-seat, but I would have to be a contortionist.

2) I can jump my batteries with remote posts that are there for this reason and,

3) Remove the hinges

When it comes down to it, although frustrating because of the poor design, removing the hinges is probably not that big of a deal . . . ;)

Edit: thought of a 4th. You could trickle charge the battery from under the dash somewhere. I am sure someone will respond with a big capitalized DON'T, but seems like a possibility none-the-less . . .

I don't care what they say about you over in DC, that is a pretty smart idea. :D ;)

I am sure there has to be some reason why you should not do that, but I can't think of any.

There are charge adapters made to charge a battery thru your accessory plug (smokes lighter). Cant see a problem with it , I know it takes longer than a regular charger. Try one of your auto parts stores. :) :)

Re: 21' stingray... Electric engine Cover Closed. Bat. Dead

I have noodled on this for a while because I have a really flaky hatch ram. I have to do a little dance, wiggle the hatch and click my heels together to get it to go. I can't determine what the flip is going on, but I really haven't done a proper job of troubleshooting it. My nephew had a spare ram sitting around which I switched out and it made no difference whatsoever. One of these days I am gonna replace the stupid thing with a gas strut. I honestly think these rams are there just so it looks cool when you hit the flippin' switch from the helm . . . I hate mine

Are you not strong enough to lift the cover? ;)

Sorry to chime in with nothing of value to add... but who designed that!?!?

Yes, I could lift it, but when you are checking oil etc. it is too heavy to hold for very long. I could get a stick I suppose, and I did that with my old boat . . .

Funny thing is, my nephew is a tech on these customs built around here. Eliminator's, Magic's, Carrera's (mine) etc. He has taken the Carrera design back to Magic. They have to take the whole rear seat out if a ram fails . . . Some of these Magic's are $200K boats!!! Stupid boats, but $200K none-the-less. At least mine has that access hole built behind the seat cushions. I'm conviced that the gas struts are the way. I am gonna climb around a friend's Chaparral this next trip, I think he is in worse shape than me . . .

This is too funny. Reminds me of a conversation I had with the sales guy trying to sell me a new car. No trunk lock any more -- all electric. My comment was "we have a dead battery, my jumper cables are in the trunk, how do I get to them." Another "brilliant" sales guy comes over and says "call OnStar they'll pop it for you". He didn't see any humor when I informed him OnStar could not ship a battery or recharge mine by radio wave.
