I just picked up a used 1985 Force 15 hp motor; model 152F5A. I have limited information on this motor and because its in near-new shape I don't think I need to go out and buy the manual, yet. I know car and motorcycle motors so ... I am mainly just looking for basic maintenance info on this motor:

spark-plug type and gap
fuel/oil mixture
anything else like this that would be necessary.

Thank you much!!!

You should probably go ahead and buy that manual. That motor probably needs an impeller. It maybe like new, but its still nearly 20 years old.

Oil/gas is 50:1 Can't help you with the gap.

Re: Force 15 BASIC questions.

Good little motor, one of the better motors made by Chrysler/US Marine/Force/Mercury. Do what player says and lower unit oil change too. Keep an eye on the lower unit seals after about an hour or two of running(check for milky oil) Being that old I would replace fuel pump diaphrams and all the little hoses under the hood. There is a tiny fuel screen on the inlet side of the fuel pump, looks like a pipe adapter fitting. Because of their size they clog easily. Good idea to run an inline fuel filter with this engine. Carb is contankerous to gum and crud, might wanna break it down and clean it jus in case and run some "Engine Tune" decarb thru the engine before you go out WOT. Don't let the engine run lean 'cause of a plugged carb, it will trash this little engine in a second. Some time about the age of your motor they went to solid state ignition, don't know if yours has points or solid state though...give us serial number and we can find out...If ya try and run the engine before doing these things, you could plug up the engine with hard rubber parts from the fuel pump and lines plus any other crud floating around in there from sitting.

Re: Force 15 BASIC questions.

I have a 1989 Force 15hp I have been working on for a couple weeks. I was having some issues trying to get the lower cylinder to fire. There was spark to the plug but I guess not enough. The points looked good and were gapped right. I pulled the reed plate, which is where the carb mounts, and I pulled the head. I replaced the reed plate gaskets and the head gasket. Compression was good to begin with. What I did is install a Magnatune solid state ignition kit which took about 20min or so. This kit eliminates the points and condensers and fires multiple sparks. I was highly impressed with the performance and it costs me $45 from Napa. Points and condensers were more expensive. If you are running points the gap is .020 and plugs .030. My carb had a wad of goop in it from sitting. I would suggest a carb rebuild and cleaning and a new fuel pump. Total for both is less than $20 from Napa. Good luck.
