1993 Force 150 HP -- compression??? time for new motor?

I recently (10-15 hours of running) purchased a '93 trophy with a 150 hp force. Two weekends ago, after about an hour or two of running on and off to fishing holes, the engine lost about 1000 RPM's. As we headed home, we lost another 1000, only able to maintain about 3000 RPM's. The RPM's would jump +/- 400 RPM's too, leading me to believe a possible fuel prob.
I checked the fuel, added fuel additive, changed the internal fuel filter, and added a Raycor fuel/water filter.
Didn't work again. Same exact problems. So, then i did a compression check:
#1 - 47
#2, #3, #4 - 80
#5 - 60
Obviously there are problems with 1 & 5. I called the local merc dealer, his exact words were "it's toast, but it might make a good anchor." He suggested anything lower than 90 pounds was worthless.

Two main questions:
1. Does anybody know what a healthy 150 Force compression test would show?
2. If there is only 80 pounds pressure on the three "good" cylinders, is that low enough that is doesn't make sense to bother trouble shooting why the other two are lower?

Thanks!!

its not the total compression but the variances between the readings that mean the most...if you had 75 to 80 on all= so-so....110 on all= good....120 or 130 on all=great...no more than 10lb difference or=trouble

Hmmm. It is not usual for two cylinders to go south from serious trouble at the same time.

You may have a carbon problem. Pull the plugs and inspect the cylinder walls and piston crowns.

But: If you really want a better engine, I agree with the wrench: Toast.

Good luck. :)

The Force 150hp were known for breaking rings. They used a keystone or pressure back ring with a very wide exhaust port. Carbon would get behind the ring and then it would catch on the port and break. To fix the problem I used the old chrysler piston (I believe the part # is SA335260 for a .010 piston, that might be the rings) Anyway, I have done many of these mods with no problems. Hope that helps

Could just be a head gasket and check head to make sure its level like glass. Not sure if you have one on a 93. Exhaust plate can leak also check that with engine running. First thing I would do is get some Sea Foam and use alot of it. Do a search on this stuff

Drake, your numbers are waay low....normal comp readings on a 150 of this vintage is 130 to 145..[cold, throttle closed]....with a starter cranking the engine over smartly...a crap starter or half dead battery throws it all off....
