Hi all,

I just recently purchased the above engine (3 cyl and 3 carbs). The model # is: 857HD

The motor is very new looking and I got an exceptional deal on it. Plus it was delivered for free.

I finally got it and put it on my boat. It had been sitting indoors for probably 10 years. I knew all the basic stuff that would have to be done to get it into "useable" condition but my main concern right off is to make sure the ignition works. After that, then I can clean the carbs, replace impeller, and replace fuel pump. I decided to squirt some premix into each carb throat and try to start it that way. Is this a bad way to do it? Anyway it didn't work.

I took off the distributor and checked the points. All looked well with that. I made sure I put it back just like it came off (timing belt and flywheel marks).

Then I decided to use a spark tester. Of course it showed me what I already figured -- no spark.

So I got out my volt meter that I'm not very competent with. I am getting 12 volts to the CD module (blue wire). I checked the resistance on coil and it went about 3/4 of the way to the right. I'm not real good with ohms. The manual said to put it on Rx1 but I don't have that setting. So I put it on Rx10 and it went 3/4 the way over.

I'm figuring it is probably the CD module but I wanted to ask if there is a "sure way" to find out. Also, is there anything else I should try? This is probably the reason it has been sitting for 10 years. Then again, if I replace the module, I will have a "like new" engine (if that's the problem).

Thanks,

Shane
