I have a 1985 force 85 motor and was wondering how difficult it is to change one. I do most of my own maintanence on cars but boats seem to be a different story. I am new to this and would like to know what to look for. is there a certain alignment I have to keep? talking with a boat mech today he was telling me about a customer that had the LU on misaligned and didnt have any gear. Just wanting to know if I can try to dave some money by me doing it.

Thanks

Its not too hard, just a few things to check and directions to follow. It should cost somewhere between $15 and $30 to do it yourself, plus the cost of the manual, which will walk you thru the process, step by step.

If it's anything like a 50HP force it's no problem, I did one last weekend easy

This is very easy to do.
First thing is to disconnect the shifter. This is done without going into the engine at all. You will find a cotter key you will need to remove and pull the pin. Next there are 6 bolts holding lower section onto the middle section. You dont even have to remove the prop. This unit is a little heavy so be carefull. With the bolts removed the lower section will come out and also be carefull as it may fall out(with engine in raised position.
Whith this removed you will see the impeller housing and you remove these bolts and replace impeller and reverse what you have done..
Get the bok and follow the steps it is very easy.

I have done a 175 johnson & 200 mercury this year. Pull the thing. put it on a work bench with lighting & a large vice is good to help hold the drive shaft. A large hammer & chizzle is nice to hammer off the old one. its a ***** to get off sometimes. Then some compressed air to blow out the old sand or salt or scraped off gaskets. Also some brake parts parts cleaner spray to get the old nasty grease off & stuff. You will need some gasket sealer (check manual on your kind needed)

I have a 120 Force and I just changed mine out Saturday. If your going to change the impeller you might as well buy the kit and change the gaskets and the impeller plate. I bought the whole kit from boatingsolutions.com for about $25. It only took about 30 min. to replace. Putting it back on the motor was a different story. The drive shaft, shifting arm and pump tube were not co-operating. Good luck!

Thanks guys, The common thing I am hearing is "get a manual" so I think i will just for any circumstances that might throw a kink in the job.
plus it will help me do all the other things when the time comes to do maintenance.
I appreciate all the help..
